A workshop ‘Save the Himalayas’ was held in Kentucky, USA, during a joint convention of the Association of Nepalese in Mid-West America (ANMA) and Nepalese Association in Southeast America (NASeA) on September 6. According to the organisers, the workshop focused on the need of raising voice to save the Himalayas from the impact of climate change. Angchiring Sherpa shared his experience of climate change impacts he witnessed during his Everest expedition. Urging media for cooperation and collaboration in this regard, Sherpa said the global warming has threatened the ecosystem, adding that the impact could be far more serious than expected if we don’t become serious. Meanwhile, Nepal’s envoy to the USA, Dr. Shankar Sharma, extended support to the effort and assured full cooperation from his office. He further added to help disseminate news and awareness to fellow diplomats from other countries.
Speaking on the occasion, Karma G. Sherpa, Tsewang Sherpa Lama and Dr. Tara Niraula among others appealed everyone to come forward and join the rally that will be held at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, 47th Street and 1st Avenue, Manhattan, New York on September 22 from 4 pm onwards. A petition for worldwide signature would be made available online by September 9 and submitted to global leaders at the United Nations (UN). Dr. Tara Niraula also said the Government of Nepal must campaign to get attention of the Mountain Forum and other related groups of global leaders in the United Nations through Nepal’s permanent representative to the UN. Recently, Non-Resident Nepali Association America signed an understanding with NTNC to host an awareness rally on September 22, 2010 in front of the United Nations while world leaders meet for annual UN summit. Summitter Sherpa is coordinating the event while Tek Gurung and Dr. Binod Shah are its co-coordinators.
