‘Nepal fastest urbanizing country in South Asia’

Kathmandu: Possibly the least urbanized country in South Asia, Nepal is also the fastest urbanizing nation in the region — and unless the government seriously manages urbanization better, the country could fail to attain economic efficiency from the process, a new World Bank study has warned.

The findings of the study — Urban Growth and Spatial Transition: An Initial Assessment — which the WB disseminated, says urban population in Nepal has grown at more than 5 percent on average since the 1970s, mainly as people moved rapidly to areas of jobs and better economic opportunities.

While that has led some 20 percent of Nepal’s population to presently live in urban areas, the urban areas are together generating about 65 percent of gross domestic product. Given that urban areas serve as powerhouse of economy in any country, the report says Nepal can tap the potential of its cities to leverage their comparative advantages and turn them into competitive advantages, reported Xinhua.  Continue reading

Tourism to be listed as priority industry

KATHMANDU: The cabinet has finally approved high level committee’s report regarding development of tourism sector as a national priority industry.

“The cabinet recently approved the report submitted by the high level committee for developing the tourism sector as a national priority industry,” said joint secretary at the Division of Tourism Industry Mohan Sapkota. “We will soon start implementing the recommendations,” he said.

According to Sapkota, a meeting between government and private sector will be organised to take a final decision for the execution of plans and programmes for developing the tourism sector as a priority industry. Continue reading

Ktm-Pokhara tourist bus now operates twice a day

Tourism entrepreneurs have started operating tourist buses services twice a day one Pokhara-Kathmandu-Pokhara route from Monday. So far, they were operating the services only once in the morning.

Under the new arrangement, tourists would have two options. They can take the bus at 7:30 if it suits them. But if they want to start journey a bit late, they can catch the bus at 10:30 from Rastra Bank Chowk in Pokhara and Sorhakhutte in Kathmandu. The fare is same.

Tourism entrepreneurs said the frequency was increased because of increasing demand from domestic and foreign tourists. Kedar Sharma, President of Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA) Pokhara Chapter said the increased number of bus services was going to facilitate tourists as they will not have to hurry early in the morning to catch the bus.
