Everest Climbing Fee Update 2025: New $15,000 Permit

The government of Nepal is implementing a significant increase in its climbing permit fees for Mount Everest, setting the rate at $15,000 for foreign climbers. This increase is part of a comprehensive plan aimed at reducing environmental pollution and enhancing safety measures on the world’s highest peak.

The revised regulations, approved by the Cabinet on January 8, will soon be published in the Nepal Gazette. For the upcoming spring climbing season, running from March to May, the royalty fee for climbers using the standard south route will rise from $11,000 to $15,000. The fees for those planning to climb during the autumn season will also see an increase, rising from $5,500 to $7,500. Furthermore, climbing fees for the winter and monsoon seasons will rise from $2,750 to $3,750.

Nepali climbers will not be exempt from these changes; the spring royalty fee on the normal route will double from Rs 75,000 to Rs 150,000. Among the new regulations, climbers will be required to hire a guide for any ascent of mountains exceeding 8,000 meters, including Everest, with the stipulation that one guide must be employed for every two climbers.

To better regulate climbing activities, the validity of climbing permits will also be shortened from 75 days to 55 days. In a bid to combat pollution, climbers will now be mandated to return with their waste, including human waste, using biodegradable bags. Additionally, permits will be limited to the items explicitly listed in the climbers’ documentation.

To enhance the safety of high-altitude workers, insurance coverage will be increased: for guides, it will rise from Rs 1.5 million to Rs 2 million, while base camp workers will now receive Rs 1.5 million, up from Rs 800,000. This initiative aims to provide better protection for Sherpas and support staff who face immense risks during expeditions. Additionally, the government has paved the way for rescue teams and cleaning crews to collect waste and deceased bodies up to Camp IV without the need for permits.

As the climbing community adapts to these new regulations, there has never been a better time to experience the majestic mountains of Nepal. Ghale Treks invites all adventure seekers to join us for an unforgettable journey that promises breathtaking views, exhilarating climbs, and a deep connection to the rich culture of the Himalayas. Embark on your Nepali adventure today!
